Memory you can see, and control

Once Copilot could create work, the next question was how it could learn from you over time. I designed Memory for Word and Office Agent, turning an invisible system into something people can see and control.

The problem

Invisible by design

Invisible by design

A document is something you can see and judge. Memory works in the background. People didn’t know what was saved, why, when it was used, or how to change it. The same invisibility that makes memory effortless can also make it unsettling.

What we learned

Control, made visible

Control, made visible

Memory started as a personalization problem and quickly became a control one: not how to remember more, but how to let people see and delete what’s remembered. And people shouldn’t need to understand where memory lives to stay in charge of it.

What I designed

Transparent, but calm

Transparent, but calm

I designed memory to speak up at the moments that matter and stay quiet the rest of the time.

01

A notice when something is saved

02

Delete any single memory

03

A temporary chat for one-off work

04

One place to manage it all

Two calls shaped it

Not every preference should stick.

Not every preference should stick.

“Make this professional” doesn’t mean “always write professionally.” People write differently for every audience.

Transparency has limits.

Transparency has limits.

Transparency has limits.

Too little feels scary, and too much is noise.

People don’t want memory. They want less repetition, and more trust.

Clear controls now let people see and manage what the system remembers, across Word and Office Agent.

THAT’S THE STORY
